Meredith Woolnough is a visual artist working from her eponymous blog, from the coastal region of Newcastle NSW, Australia. Meredith creates elegant embroidered traceries that capture the fragility and beauty of nature in exquisite knotted threads. These structures closely resemble living forms, such as leaves and plant life, veins and even ocean coral. Her work is also hold in a number of private, as well as corporate collections globally. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My work aims to capture the beauty and fragility of nature in knotted embroidery threads.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Once I have decided upon a subject I will do lots of drawings until I have developed a design that I am happy with. This will then be transformed into embroidery.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I tend to work alone but my studio space at the Newcastle Community Arts Centre means that I am surrounded by other artists. While we don’t work together directly we all help to inspire and support each other making an otherwise very lonely profession feel like it has a community.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Whenever I need inspiration for a new artwork I like to go out into nature. A walk in the bush or a scuba dive is often all I need to find something that will spark an idea that will eventually develop into an artwork.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Working as an artist requires dedication and hard work developing not only the artwork itself but all of the other aspects that are involved in the business side of things. My advice to aspiring artists is to develop work that they are proud of and to always be professional and organised.
